Hassan Heddar Calls for Regulatory Reform to Unlock Tunisia's Alternative Tourism Potential

Alternative tourism has become a strategic opportunity for Tunisia to strengthen its competitiveness, improve visitor spending, and diversify its tourism offering, according to tourism official Hassan Heddar.

Tunisia should prioritize alternative tourism as part of a broader strategy to enhance the competitiveness of its tourism industry, according to Hassan Heddar, Secretary-General of the Joint Professional Tourism Federation.

He argued that today's travelers increasingly seek authentic experiences centered on culture, nature, wellness, and local heritage, creating significant opportunities for Tunisia to diversify its tourism offering.

Heddar stressed that improving service quality, encouraging investment, and modernizing tourism regulations are essential to increasing the sector's economic value.

He highlighted the need to finalize regulations governing alternative accommodation, noting that although Tunisia has nearly 3,000 alternative lodging establishments, only about 200 have obtained full operating licenses.

According to Heddar, stronger regulation and improved investment conditions would help Tunisia compete more effectively with regional destinations such as Turkey, Morocco, and Egypt while increasing visitor spending and supporting sustainable tourism growth.
